01Why four to six is the sweet spot
Children at that age copy what they see without over-thinking it, and they are light enough that their own body weight is easy to control. Balance, landing and body awareness go in almost without being taught. It is also the age where the habit sticks.
02Starting at seven to eleven
Perfectly normal, and in some ways easier to coach: a child of nine follows a correction the first time and has the strength to hold a shape. They will be in a beginners group with other beginners, not behind children who started at four.
03Starting at twelve or later
Still worth it, though the goal shifts. A twelve-year-old beginner is unlikely to be doing competitive gymnastics, but they gain the core strength, flexibility and body control that makes every other sport easier — which is why footballers and martial artists take it.
04What the first year actually works on
Shapes, landings and strength before skills. The tumbling a parent pictures comes after a child can hold a straight body and land without collapsing. Sessions are repetitive by design, and that repetition is the training.
